The Garden Route is an acclaimed 300-kilometer scenic coastal corridor running along the southern coast of South Africa between Mossel Bay in the Western Cape and Storms River in the Eastern Cape. Sandwiched between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountain ranges to the north and the pounding Indian Ocean to the south, the route traverses ancient afro-temperate rainforests, dramatic coastal lagoons, amber rivers, and expansive sandy beaches.

Essential Stops Along the Route

While the N2 highway allows you to drive the entire distance in under four hours, rushing through misses the true appeal of the region. Plan for at least 4 to 6 days to properly explore the individual coastal reserves:

  • Wilderness: Part of the Garden Route National Park, Wilderness features a network of tranquil lagoons, wetlands, and mountain passes. The Half Collared Kingfisher Trail winds along the Touw River through deep forest to a hidden waterfall with wooden boardwalks.
  • Sedgefield & Gericke's Point: A quiet coastal village renowned for its Saturday farmers' market and towering fossilized sandstone dunes. At low tide, walk along the beach to Gericke's Point to examine sheltered tidal pools teeming with marine life.
  • Knysna: Built around a massive tidal estuary, Knysna is famous for its twin sandstone cliffs known as The Heads, which flank the narrow, dangerous channel connecting the lagoon to the ocean. Dine on cultivated Knysna oysters along the waterfront and visit the ancient Outeniqua yellowwood trees in the surrounding forests.
  • Plettenberg Bay ("Plett"): A fashionable resort town with sweeping golden beaches and dolphin pods frequently surfing the waves. Just south of town lies the Robberg Nature Reserve, a dramatic rocky peninsula offering a breathtaking 9-kilometer loop trail past a noisy breeding colony of Cape fur seals.
  • Tsitsikamma National Park (Storms River): The dramatic climax of the Garden Route. The famous Storms River Mouth suspension bridge spans 77 meters across the amber river canyon as it empties into the ocean breakers.
Robberg Hiking Note: If doing the full Robberg Peninsula loop hike, wear sturdy footwear with good grip. The path negotiates loose sand dunes ("The Witsand") and jagged coastal rocks. Carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person, as there are no water points on the peninsula itself.

Driving Practicalities on the N2

The N2 highway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth is a single-carriageway road with frequent overtaking lanes. South African road etiquette dictates that if you are driving at a slower pace and a faster vehicle approaches from behind, you may pull over into the paved yellow emergency shoulder (provided it is safe and visible ahead) to allow them to pass. The passing driver will typically flash their hazard lights twice as a gesture of thanks, to which you may reply with a single flick of your high beams.

Caution: Never pull onto the yellow shoulder in the dark, during heavy rain, or on blind corners, as rural pedestrians and unlit livestock frequently use the road verge.
